Six Months Later…

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

You never know how life’s going to come at you next, I guess that’s what keeps it so exciting to live. In any case, we started with a mission and got a little sidetracked with work, bills, and other assorted what-have-you’s. We stopped doing what we set out to do because we just couldn’t find the spare time, money or energy to keep this thing running at full steam, and that sucked beyond suckage. There’s not much worse things to feel than your pride and joy languishing before it’s even truly begun to blossom.

No more.

There are very, VERY big things in the works. We’ve decided to go ahead and announce an announcement (Hideo Kojima can do it, so can we!) for the middle of September. Keep your eyes peeled, because Central Florida won’t be the same after we drop a bombshell of this magnitude. Shockwave incoming.

Mid-September. There’s a thing happening, right here. Be there for that.

B-KIN ROUND THREE: YOU CAN HAS WINNERZ

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

B-KIN Round Three: WAR! is a wrap! Over! Donewiddit! Finito!

So, without further ado, here’s your top three in both MvC2 and TvC:UAS!

MARVEL VS CAPCOM 2:
1st Place: Tristan Carnegie (Kokujin)
2nd Place: Kieran Carnegie (KaPeH)
3rd Place: Chris Princler (CanadianDstryr)

Saw some great matches, some real down-to-the-wire rounds and total domination by two brothers of the entire proceedings! We’re hoping to see more of these three at our events in the future!

TATSUNOKO VS CAPCOM: ULTIMATE ALL-STARS

1st Place: Jamel Fleming (Hsien_Jo)
2nd Place: Devon Ramon (Nobody)
3rd Place: Andrew (Tha Farmboi)

Gotta say, the fights in TvC:UAS were the ones to watch - I physically witnessed some of the greatest comebacks known to mankind that fateful Saturday in February! Our very good friend Hsien-Jo made his combo-linking skills the talk of the day, with a punishing Morrigan and an ABSOLUTELY BEASTLY Roll (I know, ROLL of all characters!).

There’s your breakdown! We should have video coming soon (provided we get clearance from the players in attendance), so if you head over to our YouTube link on the right side of the page, you’ll catch all the action that you missed! Which, speaking of missing action, make sure that this doesn’t happen twice and stay up with us - join the forums and get involved, and stay in the know about our upcoming events!

On the subject of upcoming events, you really should keep your eyes peeled. We’ll have an announcement of EPIC proportions coming very, very soon, believe that.

I can’t say much right now…but I can say that the event we’re planning is going to be very SUPER indeed.

B-KIN Round Two - A Winner Is You!

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Well, that had to have been the largest and best tournament Daytona Beach had ever seen. Seriously, big thanks to all EIGHTY-THREE competitors for coming out and playing, we’re doing this for you guys (and girls), so that was a huge sign for us! You’ll continue to have tournaments like that, guaranteed!

Where to begin?

Team Paragon made a truly epic showing. As in, brought-down-the-house-single-handedly epic. HRNut went un-de-feat-ed (so nasty, you gotta say it phonetically) through sixty-three - count them - sixty-three competitors to prove himself the undisputed Smash Bros. Brawl champ! Also, Curaga (who happens to be quite the good friend of ours) made a pretty impressive showing as well, his only loss in the Winner’s Bracket coming at the hands of his teammate HRNut (at the bracket final, no less), and then proceeding to wipe out the competition in the remainder of the Loser’s Bracket, claiming the LB final, and then only getting stopped in the Grand Final for a legendary 2nd Place finish!

Our good friend Hsien-Jo rained down feline judgment with his Taokaka in BlazBlue. Pap3r.Ninj4 of The Knights fought it out to a very close 2nd Place finish, and Nobody, another B-Kin comrade, took 3rd Place in BOTH events! Absolutely phenomenal showings of skill and sportsmanship all around!

We’ve got video to post on our Official YouTube Channel, but we haven’t finished getting all of the best parts cut and edited yet, so we’ll have those up ASAP. In the meantime, stay tuned for our next event announcement…which should be hitting this space very, very, VERY soon.

Big thanks to Roger and Leslie @ Blue Dragon for giving all of us a home away from home, and with way better monitor displays than most of us have to begin with. You guys are the best.

THE FIRST BKIN TOURNAMENT IS HERE!

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

The first B-KIN event is underway! On Thursday, December 3rd 2009 we will be bringing you the inaugural tournament in our competitive tournament series, which will be held at Miller’s Ale House in Daytona Beach, Florida featuring Tekken 6 and Street Fighter IV! Here’s the full breakdown of what to expect:

THE FIVE GOLDEN RULES
1.) $5 entry fee for each tournament, so $5 to enter into the running for either T6 or SF4, $10 for both. These funds go directly to two things: the Prize Pool (which can increase depending on number of total participants, the more that play out, the more gets paid out) and our setup/administrative costs. ABSOLUTELY NONE of the entry fee money directly profits any of our staff. We do not, will not, and will never hold these tournaments for profit - we’re out here purely for the love of the game, the same as you. The only major difference is that you’ll be able to get paid for your skillset, should you win/place.

2.) You will not be playing a member of staff at a B-KIN tournament. EVER. That’s a pretty heinous conflict of interest in our eyes, and we will not participate as actual bracketed competitors in a tournament that we sponsor, as that would mean that there’s a chance we would win our own prize money if we did play in our tournaments - and frankly, we consider that practice a load of bullshit. However, in the (highly) unlikely event of a total no-show of players except for one competitor, the competitor will have their choice of a member of registered staff to play against for a chance at a 1st or 2nd place finish. If the competitor were to win, the full 1st place payout is awarded to them, in case of a loss, they keep the 2nd place payout and have their entry fee for the next tournament they attend waived.

3.) You are able to bring your own controllers to a B-KIN tournament. Want to use your own custom pad? That’s cool. Want to use a fightstick? That’s cool too. Want to bring a standard controller, just because you trust your own equipment? We’re down with that. Just make sure that it’s unmodified to take advantage of any kind of what-have-you in the game and we’re totally okay with it.

4.) Bracketing and referees will be provided by way of individual members of staff. No performing two or more jobs at once by any staff member, so we maintain a professional foundation in which to hold events. The way we see it, you’re serious about having fun, so we’ll be just as serious as you are about keeping it that way. Most of all, we’re about keeping it fair.

5.) The first and second place prizes are a guaranteed payout. If you’re one of 4 people that show up (because in that case, folks just weren’t cool enough to come out en masse and play for cash), you’re still going to get your payout. We won’t cancel the prize or the tournament. It’s yours, provided you earn it, even if it’s just an automatic 1st vs 2nd place tournament.

SPECIFIC TOURNAMENT RULES
-Both Titles-
- Double Elimination
- Winner Bracket/Loser Bracket
- Must Lose Twice To Be Completely Eliminated
- Loser Bracket Champion Proceeds To Finals
- Character Change Is Allowed Whether Win Or Loss
- Regular Tournament Play Will Be Best 2 Of 3 Round Fights, Best 2 Of 3 Matches
- Semi-Finals And Onward Will Be Best 3 Of 5 Round Fights, Best 2 Of 3 Matches
- Previously Undefeated Competitors Must Be Defeated Twice If In Grand Final

Note:
When you are called up to play, you will have 3 minutes (180 seconds, timed by stopwatch) to approach your station or be disqualified. Next matchups will be requested to remain close to the tournament station in an “on-deck” position in order to facilitate timely progress of play.

Do’s And Dont’s:

- Do know that gameplay pauses will be forgiven if within the first five seconds of play. Afterwards, depending on the state of play (i.e. near endgame), you may face disqualification and forfeit all rights to proceed onward.

- Do know that custom button-mapping is allowed, but only before match start. In the case of starting without custom buttons mapped, the player may attempt to petition the referee for clemency via a pause within the first 5 seconds of play. Once play has begun, however, the settings are final and cannot be changed until the start of the next match. Players will be reminded of such before match start.

- Don’t be a tool. Play like a sportsman, behave like a sportsman, or face expulsion.

- Don’t be late to your match.

- Don’t be late to the start of a tournament. For the sake of timeliness, we will be starting play within 20 minutes of scheduled time, which means that if the tournament is scheduled for 7:00pm, play will start by 7:20 whether you have arrived or not. Once play has started, no further entrants will be allowed, as the brackets will be set and locked.

- Staff will be there early for signups, and you will have an opportunity to sign up on the B-KIN forums @ www.bkin-ubf.com/forums. Make sure you register early for best results.

That’s all for now, if anything changes, check this space for notated edits.
Any questions, comments, concerns, fears, hopes, doubts, dreams, wishes, and other ponderings can be directed at staff on our forums at the sidebar to the right or at www.bkin-ubf.com/forums.

See you there!

The Mission Statement

Monday, June 8th, 2009

I prefer to keep things to the point, but forgive me if I ramble on about this particular subject, as it’s been on my mind for quite some time.

The whole point behind this site is simple: bring gamers together.  That’s it.  It’s one thing to have an online community like Kotaku or Destructoid, which brings gamers together in a general sense with little interaction besides commenting on top stories and finding a few distant playmates for your online funtime.  I don’t know about you, but when I was growing up, there was no such thing as online gaming outside of a few kids who were making custom Doom/Duke3D maps and blowing each other up via their dialup modems - lagtastical!  Online wasn’t even a real option then.  If you wanted to play, you’d play by yourself or perhaps a friend would trade off when you jumped wrong and fell plummeting pitwards.  If you wanted multiplayer action, you only had one real choice: hit up the local arcades, where there was only one flavor on tap - VERSUS.

With that said, I see the online landscape of today’s modern videogame industry as a sort of spiritual successor to that ancient tradition, but know this: it is no substitute.  There is nothing quite like displaying a skill in public solely to show up another skillset on the same public display.  It’s the reason why any tournament of any kind is held, to put on a show that the collective crowd will enjoy, participant and spectator alike.  There’s a small rush in watching people compete, as any sports fan is sure to tell you, but waching the game pales in comparison to being the one playing the game.  Nobody can argue that truth, and if you tried, you’d invariably, inevitably fail.

I wanted to see that scene return, not as a coin-op resurrection of a rose-tinted past, but bring it back to the forefront with a relevance that suits our modern age.  You see, the guys that were the arcade rats have all grown up.  We’re pushing 30, 40, even 50 these days.  The average age of the videogame player is solidly in the 30-something range.  We remember that time fondly, and for good reason, as a lot of friendships and rivalries still grow strong out of that blossoming age.  The young ones know not of what I speak, but maybe I can have a hand in changing that, at least semi-locally.

What this site aims to do is simple: bring games back to the people, away from the comfortable trappings of the personal domain and back into the forefront of the public eye in a positive way.  We, as the group who run this site, wish to bring back the old ways in a new way.  We want to create a full-fledged tournament scene with the best local (which can be a broad definition, it all depends on growth) competition that we can offer, and that takes one central component to make that vision work and come to fruition: YOU.

Well, YOU and all of YOUR FRIENDS.

You see, without players, there is no game.  Without a place to gather info and meet other players, there is no scene.  Enter B-Kin.

The name itself carries multiple connotations: B, which can stand for brotherhood, brawls, battles, or whatever you want it to mean.  Kin, which is a word to define family.  Together, it means to be as a family, a collective whole working towards one singular purpose - to have fun doing what we do best, to have fun doing what you love.  But here’s the kicker, the double-entendre cherry on top: if you say the name out loud, you are saying “beacon.”  Just as a flare draws a search party, a lighthouse draws ships, and a flag rallies troops, this site is a beacon on high for all of the people in the Central Florida area that feel a need to play, compete and make friends in a far different venue than the cold, faceless trappings of online play.  If everything truly goes in cycles, welcome to the rebirth of the circle: face-to-face is back, baby.  Go for broke.

That’s the story, in a nutshell.  Feel free to check back often, as this front page will be updated with news, stories, and video of our exploits (or will they be yours?).  Click the Forum link on the sidebar to your right to find the family you never knew you had, all gamers welcome regardless of genre preference or skill level.  Rest assured you will find your next worthwhile match here.

Welcome to B-Kin.  Contribute freely, and often.  Welcome home.

Welcome to the adventure. B-Kin is here.

Bear with us - the full site is still in progress and needs a little more time, so don’t shy away just yet.  We’re soon to be the site you never knew you wanted to visit regularly.
